Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
