An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online
Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of uncertain source.
Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with numerous of users, filled with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these communities, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
