Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
